Xunantunich & Cahal Pech

Spend the day at maya archeological sites? Then join us for a half day at Cahal Pech and Xunantunich. Mystic River makes adventure travel in Belize easy and convenient!

Join our trained guide as we begin with navigating the Cahal Pech site. This site was once a palatial home for an elite Mayan family.  It is one of the oldest recognizable Maya sites in Western Belize.  The site was abandoned in the 9th century AD for unknown reasons.

The name Cahal Pech means “place of ticks” and was adopted in the 1950s when the area was a cow pasture.  Cahal Pech is now an archaeological park and houses a small museum with artifacts from various ongoing excavations.

After the thrilling experience at the site, continue with the journey at the Xunantunich Maya ruin. Pronounced “shoo-NAHN-too-nich”, it is located about 130 kms (80 miles) west of Belize City, atop a ridge overlooking the Mopan River.  Its name means “Stone Woman” in the Mayan language.  The “Stone Woman” refers to the ghost of a woman who several people have claimed inhabits the site.  The ghost is said to be dressed completely in white and have fire-red glowing eyes.  She generally appears in front of El Castillo, ascends the stone stairs and disappears into a stone wall!

This two in one exploration will make your vacation worthwhile.

BELIZE COVID-19 TRAVEL UPDATES

As of October 1st, 2021 the Belize International Airport (BZE) and Belize are welcoming international travelers. Mystic River Resort is welcoming guests again and offering our superb guest services as usual with some added practices in place to ensure the health and safety of both our guests and employees alike. Keeping everyone safe has become our motto!

Belize has quickly adapted to the new-norm and implemented a GOLD STANDARD CERTIFICATION for Hotels and Tour Operators, and created a Safe Corridor for travelers to explore freely and safely. Mystic River Resort has diligently carried through all relevant training and has health and safety protocols in place, such as the use of disinfectants, wearing of masks, and monitoring of temperature for both guests and staff, and social distancing to name a few.

Social distancing is easy at the resort since our restaurant and bar are both alfresco and provide ample spacing. All our suites are private cabanas and we provide a minimum of 24 hours turnover to ensure proper cleaning and sanitization.

Tours and transfers are all private per group or individuals traveling together. Our licensed specialty guides ensure that proper hygiene, distancing, and disinfecting are practiced throughout your journey and adventures.

Times have changed but our team is ecstatic to welcome you and help you create amazing memories to last a lifetime!

Sincerely,
Nadege Thomas, Owner
